Kaurna Name Unveiled for Reconciliation Space

image

Mankumankurrinyangka Taikurrinthi

We are thrilled to announce the new Kaurna name for the space in front of the eastern mural: Mankumankurrinyangka Taikurrinthi, meaning “Joining together in reconciliation.” This significant place name was created for us by the Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi (KWK).

Pronunciation Guide:

  • Place the main stress on the first syllable of each word – i.e.  MANkumankurrinyangka TAIkurrinthi.
  • double-R [rr] is a rolled-R, like in Scottish, Welsh or Spanish.
  • The [th] at the end of the phrase is the same as a t-sound, but with your tongue between the teeth. That is, like the D in width, NOT like the th in this or then.
  • Vowels: [a] as in Pappa, [u] as in put, [i] as in bit, [ai] as in aisle.

Meaning and Significance:

  • Mankumankurrinyangka: Derived from the verb “mankurrinthi,” meaning “reconciling” or “making up with someone,” it signifies the ongoing act of reconciliation.
  • Taikurrinthi: Represents “joining together, being in partnership, or being united,” highlighting the community spirit embodied in the space.

The Mural and its Purpose:

The mural, designed by Iteka Sanderson Bromley with our students and painted by Tjimari Sanderson Milera, serves as a visual representation of our community. The space itself encourages quiet reflection as we contemplate our journey towards reconciliation and the collaborative efforts with the children and staff at St Andrew’s.

Moving Forward:

The adoption of this Kaurna name reflects our commitment to acknowledging and respecting the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. Mankumankurrinyangka Taikurrinthi serves as a constant reminder of our shared responsibility to foster reconciliation and build a more inclusive future together.

Marni padni! (Go well!)
